A Tribute to USC President C.L. Max Nikias
and the USC Arts and Humanities Initiative

Being a student at USC means being ushered into one of the world’s most vibrant cultural centers: Southern California. The Visions and Voices program enables students in all disciplines and at all levels to explore the vast diversity of the arts on campus, and in nearby theaters, concert halls, and museums. The initiative, unprecedented in higher education, was the brainchild of then-USC Provost C. L. Max Nikias. In this 30-minute tribute, Classical KUSC celebrates Dr. Nikias’s ambitious vision, and his inauguration as the eleventh President of USC.
Highlights include a wide-ranging interview with Dr. Nikias himself, the words of student participants in Visions and Voices, sounds and music from some of the colorful programs themselves, and a chat with the initiative’s Managing Director, Daria Yudacufski. Co-hosted and co-produced by KUSC’s Gail Eichenthal and Alan Chapman.

In a private gala, Larry Livingston, music director of the USC Thornton orchestras, leads the USC Thornton Symphony in a celebration of the inauguration of university president C. L. Max Nikias. This special event features a premiere by Thornton faculty composer Erica Muhl and Tchaikovksy’s Rococo Variations played by world-renowned cellist and Thornton faculty Ralph Kirshbaum. The program also includes Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger and Respighi’s Pines of Rome. This event is by invitation only but will be broadcast live on KUSC, 91.5 FM.

A bittersweet love story set against the tribulations of a 1922 Atlantic crossing of 700 proxy brides, aboard the SS King Alexander, on their way to America. Niki, a seamstress from Samothrace, resigns herself to saving the family honor by marrying a Chicago tailor her sister previously rejected. On the journey, she meets Norman, an American war photographer disheartened by a career and a marriage in tatters. "Brides" will touch its audience with an unforgettable story of a doomed love affair between star crossed lovers. It follows a journey from east to west, at the same time exploring the inner journey of the people who battle the waves of agony, doubt, courage, resignation, and hope.
